I am humbled to have been asked to share my journey thus far at IQVIA. As I gather my thoughts, one question keeps coming to mind, “Why IQVIA?”

You may be anticipating the quintessential response such as work-life balance or the potential for career growth. While these attributes are true, they are not the most important to me.

As a Black man…a Black person, there is an unspoken pressure that accompanies the pursuit of success. I was nervous, eager and excited to begin my journey with this thriving company, but there was also concern for a glass ceiling that could cap my potential growth. Truth be told, I entered my new role with a certain chip on my shoulder – with the feeling I would need to work twice as hard to gain half the success of my white counterparts.

From day one at IQVIA I wanted to defy the status quo. I set goals to make genuine connections with my internal colleagues and my external customers. I am intentional about owning my career and learning as much as possible about the industry. I take advantage of opportunities that support my career growth.

After two years as a Client Account Manager, I was promoted to Manager of Product Offering. I am a pioneer in this role as I am the first and only person to hold this position in our U.S. regional business unit. This is symbolic; African Americans have been pioneers for centuries.

Throughout Black History Month, I meditate on my ancestors who fought and even died to break that glass ceiling. I acknowledge that I stand on the shoulders of countless men and women who were denied education so that I might be able to pursue my now fourth degree. I am the legacy of ancestors who cleaned offices so that I may have a seat at the conference room table. And with all the sacrifices and strides of progress, there is still work to do because there are still blind spots to the capabilities, potential and voices of African Americans in companies around the world.

IQVIA has granted me a platform to speak my truth and have authentic conversations. I am a member of the inaugural class of the Black Leadership Network and serve as the Global Communications Committee Lead. In this Employee Resource Group, we can have genuine discussions, share knowledge and celebrate African Americans throughout the organization.

IQVIA is a special company that is connected around the globe. I can collaborate with individuals of every race, gender and religion, all of whom share a passion to help create a healthier world.

One may ask, “Why IQVIA?” But I would ask, “Why not?”
